Framing for deck

Framing for deck

My clients are getting along in age. They want a deck but cannot maintain it. They would like to entertain guests in the shade of their tree, with a view onto Maynard Lake.

We look at composite decking materials. Some of the choices resemble “plastic wood”! One rather pricey brand boasts a “life time warranty”, but betrays a “plastic” appearance.

We settle for a product made by Fibron Corporation. It resembles Honduran mahogany and its color is compatible with the existing brick. It has a 30 yr. limited warranty. Deck boards are “blind fastened”.

Note the hand rail balusters, which are made of pre painted 1” diameter aluminum rods. They minimize the bulky appearance associated with traditional, 2×2 wood balusters. The edges of treads boards are rounded over.

Since the lower deck lies near the ground, I install screened vent holes every 32”. The frame work is made from treated Southern Yellow Pine and joists are set 16” on center.

The project can be viewed upon request.
